Self Identity

Anthony Giddens says that self identity is not a set of traits but is a person's own understanding of themselves. Our self identity is shaped by the narrative of our story and it changes constantly due to the actions and influences in our lives. The artist Pink uses her music videos to not only express her own self identity but also show her audience that their identity is whatever they want it to be. Giddens also believes that romatic love makes a real narrative and is the driving force of person's life

She uses her song 'Perfect' and its music video to portray how some people struggle with their self identity, however assures the audience that it will all be alright.

The video begins in the 'present day' in which the character appears to  be happy however with some sadness inside her, it then cuts to a projector, of her memories as a younger girl. I feel the transition to her younger life in this way is very effective as the audience feel like they are watching her life with her.

The narrative of this music video is one that is set out from the early years of her life is a child as shown here, she is seen to be an outcast and also a victim of bullying. This begins to show the audience, the different actions throughout her life that have shaped her self identity, as this highlights to the audience how these small details in her life affect her in a large way.

I really like how the video has both a clear main character who's life is the narrative, however there are cuts to Pink i=who is singing and clearly passionate and emotional about the subject of the song, which is about people who feel they are not good enough. The projector of the woman's memories are also being played in the background, therefore connecting the two.

After all the hardship the charcter has faced throughout her life, we eventually are shown her in resent day once more, however it is clear that she is happy here and the reason for this happiness is her husband and her being truly comfortable with her identity. This then supports Giddens' theory of how the narrative of stories and someone's life is generally propelled by a romantic relationship that is long term and future orientated.

Generally following this theory, we have the main narrative surrounding a trouble character, however mae who is struggling with his self identity also. Again there will be the added narrative of a romantic love with a girl. When this narrative about two individual s emerged in novel, for example Bronte and Austen novels it usually set apart men and women as the man were seen as much more masculine and the women were in need of them. We will however, have the male being in need of the female, therefore challenging this usual convention which is also portrayed in Pink's video.

Target Audience Questionnaire

Here we made a questionnaire which helped us find out more about our target audience of 16-20 year olds, as we supplied this questionnaire to them. We asked them questions on:
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Favourite music genre
  • Favourite bands/artists
  • How often they listened to music
  • How they listened to music e.g. downloads, vinyl etc.
  • How would they describe their style
  • Their overall interests

From the questionnaire we found that many of the 16-20 year olds we asked like similar bands which fell under the indie rock genre, for example Bastille. The candidates who liked these sorts of band and this music also had similar styles, which involved a lot of black and quite a laidback look, with jeans and converse. There were some candidates who like more pop music however their style was different. Many who had similar style and favourite bands also had similar interests, for example going to gigs.
